Overview

For many years, Rialta owners have struggled to keep their RV generators running. With parts being in short supply, or no longer available at all, some Rialta owners have found that their generators are simply un-repairable. I was one of those Rialta owners.

You can read more about my story here, but ultimately I had to come up with a permanent solution, and that solution is what I call the RIALTA RENEGADE“, a “CUSTOM BUILT” 3500/4500 Watt Inverter Generator design specifically to fit in the Winnebago Rialta. It is the only “new” generator available today that will fit in the Rialta without modifying the generator compartment.

The Rialta Renegade Provides the Following Benefits:

  • Push Button Start and Stop from Inside Your Rialta
  • Up to 4500 Watts of Pure Sine Wave Electrical Power
  • Digital Display of Volts, Watts, Amps, and Hours
  • Enough Power to Start and Run a 15,000 BTU Air Conditioner
  • Inexpensive Parts Availability
  • Backup Pull Starter
  • Increased Resell Value of Your Rialta

Using the existing generator compartment and a supplied digital control panel, you’ll continue to enjoy push button startup and shutdown, use of the onboard fuel tank (meaning no separate refueling) and the comfort of knowing that no one will attempt to steal your generator while you are sleeping.

The included digital control panel provides readouts of the volts, amps, watts, and hours of your new generator. It also includes an ECO (economy) switch to put your generator in economy mode for use when only light loads are being applied.

The Generac NP-30G and the Onan 3KVC-83B generators have been one of the biggest problem areas for Rialta owners. Many owners express extreme frustration and disappointment with the OEM generators and the service centers that service them.

Both the Onan 3KVC-83B and the Generac NP-30G have proven to be temperamental, unreliable, and very expensive (if not impossible) to repair. I’ve been amazed at some of the stories I’ve been told of repair bills exceeding $1000 only to have the generator break down again in a month or two.

The original generators are now very old and difficult if not impossible to keep working properly. Some desperate Rialta owners have resorted to hauling portable generators around on hitch carriers where they are exposed to the elements and risk of theft. Or worse still, hauling a portable generator inside their Rialta taking up valuable space and exposing the occupants to harmful gasoline fumes and the dangers of an explosion.

Also, when you want to use your generator, remember that with a portable generator, you will have to leave the comfort of your motorhome to start, stop, and refuel the generator, regardless of weather conditions. And if you decide to use a hitch carrier, it will add 2-3 feet of length the your compact motorhome, making it unsafe to park in a regular parking space.

Now I don’t know about you, but being able to park it in a standard size parking space was one of my main reasons I chose the Rialta. We are already pushing the limits at 22ft. Adding another 2-3 feet puts us way over the line, ruling out many regular sized parking spots. We may as well have 25 ft motorhomes.

About Me

Hi, I’m Roland, a fellow Rialta owner, and yes, mine came with a non-working generator also. I spent many hours researching and troubleshooting trying to fix my Generac NP-30G. I also spent hundreds of dollars on parts, only to find that the most critical parts (stator and rotor) were no longer available.

After being unable to fix the Generac generator that came with my Rialta, I decided to try a portable generator. I went with a 2000 watt version because it was the largest I was willing to carry in and out of the Rialta. Well, unfortunately it would not run my air conditioner which was the main reason I needed a generator, so I ended up returning it. Besides, I really wanted a built-in generator, so I wasn’t too disappointed.

After finding the portable generator inadequate to run my air conditioner an a major hassle to haul around, I got the bright ideal of buying a used Generac NP-30G hoping that I could get the parts I needed to fix mine. Well that actually worked for a while, but even though the generator was now working, I wasn’t very confident in it. It seemed very weak as it struggled to power my AC, it was loud as heck, and the exhaust fumes were ridiculous. It also had this weird problem of revving out of control when there was no load on the generator. So once my batteries were fully charged it would just start revving like crazy. I’d have to shut it down out of fear that it would blow.

Then the oil leak started. At first I tried thicker oil and then stop leak. Neither worked. So I pulled the generator to fix the oil leak. When I thought I had it fixed I reinstalled the generator, only to find that it still leaked. I had had enough. That was my third time pulling that generator. The next time would be my last. I had to find a solution to my generator problems.

I wanted so bad to have the power and quietness of the new inverter generators on the market, but built-in like the Generac NP-30G and Onan 3KVC-83B that came in the Rialta. So I started researching the possibility of converting one of these inverter generators into a “RV” edition, and the rest is history! 🙂

So what qualifies me to perform this conversion? The short answer is I worked in the welding and fabrication industry for over 13 years. Seven of those years was in my own business where I specialized in building utility trailers. I trained as a welder in high school and started my own welding business a few years later. I built everything from barbeque pits to steel buildings (including my own welding shop).

In 1990 I got interested in computers and the next thing you know people were asking me for help. An I loved providing it too, so it was a perfect segue into a new career. 28 years later I’m still working as a computer consultant, but I never lost my love for building things. So when I need stuff that doesn’t exist, I create it. You know what they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”. Well the Rialta Renegade is a perfect example.

What I have done here is converted an off the shelf generator into one that will fit into our tiny RV’s, eliminating the need to haul around a portable generator and all the hassles that come with it. And thanks to advancements in technology, the Rialta Renegade is more powerful, more efficient, and quieter than the original OEM versions. Oh Happy Day!

Ready to upgrade? Then give me a call or shoot me an email. I’ll be building these things as long as there’s a need.

Thanks for stopping by!
